The Dragon

The Dragon personality The Dragon is a creature of myth and legend. A symbol of good fortune and sign of intense power, the Oriental Dragon is regarded as a divine beast - the reverse of the malicious monster that Westerners felt necessary to find and slay. In Eastern philosophy, the Dragon is said to be a deliverer of good fortune and a master of authority. Therefore, those people born in Dragon years are to be honored and respected.

Stuff it...I am going to blurt!

And why not? Everyone else seems to be blurting on my behalf anyway! (Miss L this is NOT directed at you...rather a work colleague!)

The blurt

Mr K, Miss A and I would like to formally advise you that Baby Blob (as its current appearance will not deny) will come into this crazy family around the 3rd of September! That's right peeps, you read correctly! We are having another bub!

So now I can reveal a few more things...

1. Morning sickness does not only last the morning...I can't even stand the smell of Mr K's deodorant, my usually beautiful soy candle scents or anything that used to sweetly tickle my nasal passages!

2. I am tiiiiiiired...all the time! I can't wait until this phase passes...though I do rather enjoy nana naps!

3. I have not had the energy to get off the couch most nights coming home from work...hence why nothing exciting on the blog!

4. Miss A was NOT impressed when we first told her...more to the point "I don't want another baaaaaabbbbyyyyyy" (thankfully she has now embraced the idea!)

5. I am grumpy....all the time! Damn hormones! (and going cold turkey off antidepressants probably doesn't help!)

6. My clothes already don't fit me! I am only 8 weeks! Jeez!

The classic Dr Seuss tale of the Cat in the Hat comes to life in this easily usable app. There is the option of having the book read to you, reading it yourself or auto playing it. In read to me mode, the words being said light up in red...a good learning tool for small children.

The illustrations are classic Dr Seuss and the images zoom in at specific points of the story.

Six year old Miss A loves reading this book, both via the app and the paper version...the app has allowed her to learn new words and improve her reading.

Op shop treasure up-cycling...

So I checked out an op shop...I found a few bits and bobs including some vintage dolls (another new collection), some billiard balls (inspired by Vintage Bird Girl) and five silky oak drawers, discarded from an old dresser....will post pics of other finds later, but look see what I've done with the drawers!

Place drawers in desired position...

Oops...some nails needed for a quick fix!

Screw the drawers together...I've use self drilling screws.

This is how I've chosen to lay out my drawers...

Give the insides a quick clean...use a paint brush to get into the corners.

Choose your fabric and cut to approximate size...

Use spray adhesive in the drawers to fix your fabric pieces and trim using a rotary cutter...a stanly knife is useful for the corners...

So in my lunch break I decided to take a stroll down a new path... and I stumbled right into a little op shop (ok, I had an inkling it was there!)! Well, imagine my surprise and excitement when I walked in and spotted these little treasures!

So I got creative with a wide black and white polka dot ribbon and some snap presses...

Ta Da! My new, suitably girly neck strap...serves the dual function of looking good AND keeping hubby from stealing my camera!

Hello op shopping goodness and welcome to my week! That's right people, I went on another little spree! Well, I figured that I am back at work next week and thus will not have anywhere near as much fun time available to me for these frivolous addictions!

So, here's how I went...

Lovely rose teacup and saucer sprinkled with gold...

An oval platter with a...you guessed it...bird motif in the middle! And a very cute doily with appliquéd pink flowers...

Three other plates to add to my new plate wall...photos to be divulged soon!

Hello birdies!! Another new collection is beginning with these two adorable birdie bells!

Looks may be deceiving, but if you had been looking for a spice rack for as long as me you would have bought it too!! I have grand plans for this one, so keep an eye out in future posts!

A twelve place setting table cloth with 12 napkins! An awesome crocheted cushion cover to live with my previous heart cushions in the bedroom we are currently doing up...

Hot tip for solar powered lights...fairy lights, Christmas lights, garden lights....any lights!

When you buy solar powered lights, they are actually kept alive by the sun charging the batteries inside.

These are generally AA batteries of the rechargeable type. If your solar lights all of a sudden stop working, it just means that the sun has not been strong enough to maintain the charge of these batteries!

Do not throw out your lights!! Buy yourself a cheap AA battery charger, put your batteries in it over night and put back into your solar powered device....viola!

Your solar lights come back to life and you have a beautiful garden feature once again!

For a birthday ages years ago now, I got this amazing bronze chandelier! I have spent the last 3 or so years moving it from one spot to another in the garage, and really not doing much with it! Well, this week I got all inspired! Originally, I was going to restore it and find it a new home inside...but my ceilings just aren't high enough to accommodate to size of the chandelier, so I've gone to plan B...

A few coats of milk paint, a touch up coat of white spray paint, some dangling jewels bought on eBay years ago and some of this years Christmas lights....ta da! My new outdoor romantic lighting! I will put some pics up of the night time version so you can see the fairy lights in action!

Things i do...the blog...

So you may have noticed by now that my blog is a rather eclectic collection of entries...Well, that's me! I was having a chat yesterday to Mrs T from My Vintage Vow who is participating in a 'My Style' bloging venture...I told her that I didn't think I had a style and she resonded "yes you do, its eclectic!".

I guess she's right...looking around my home, I see a mix of styles residing in various corners...from vintage, antique to shabby chic, to country style...

Same goes for my clothes...I can dress one day in very 'with the trend' outfits and the next in pure retro op shop!

I have a passion for all things old, yet am an Educational Technologist, working with the latest technologies to implement into online learning programs!

I have a not so secret love of anything bird related and a geeky admiration and desire for all latest Apple gadgets!

So, instead of describing myself as confused, now I can call myself eclectic! Pretty cool I think! Rather intriguing too...

Today's Op Shopping Adventure!

Shhhh...don't tell anyone..today i went to 2 op shops!! Yay! I love op shopping!

Well, my first adventure was planned...Mrs T from My Vintage Vow and I went to a large op shop, usually stocked with all sorts of bis and pieces, furniture...you name it, its probably there!

Here are my finds...

A million jars for storage..ok, only 6... a vintage shoe horn thing!? (name please?)

Can you see a pattern emerging here?? I think I have accidentally stared a new collection! This is my third item in the Country Wares collection...a saucepan to add to my crockpot and kettle!

Op Shop number two...I had to go to the post office to collect some parcels and on the way (kind of!) I stopped and got these lovely treasures...

A very pretty tea set of four cups and saucers... keep an eye out for some more tea inspired soy candles!

Theres no place like home, theres no place like home....oh! Sorry, these cuties took me to The Wizard of Oz for a minute! How cute are they?? Love!

Yep...another bird! But not just any bird...a peacock no less and a very special one at that! This guy is one piece of red paper that someone has lovingly carved, snipped, cut, and poked holes in to create this magnificent creature...check out the close ups...

I am going to lovingly reframe him in a thick red frame...will post pics once frame is found!

There you go... I am op shop satisfied..until my next trip out!!

Not for the faint hearted, the 'birds nest' lampshade is an acquired taste...but I love it!

Upcycling at its best, the birds nest is made of a recycled lampshade, recycled buttons, felt backing, copper wire, thick zinc wire and thin silver wire...

A lovely addition to any bird lovers home, a bird sits over its wooly nest whilst another stands guard. A third bird is perched on a wooly branch, framed by two green button leaves. Copper wire is entwined all around, representing the birds nest theme.

The lightbulb sends a glow through the buttons, shadows of which create an interesting pattern on the walls.

Welcome to another great op shop haul!

Miss A and I were going to Mums house and I decided to take a small detour to the local op shop near mums house...what was supposed to be a quick look, turned into quite an adventure, with Miss A and I discovering some really cool things...

Set of four immaculate retro plates...gifted to my buddy at my vintage vow...

Cutest little bone china pin dish...

Fine china plate...couldn't resist it's beautiful pattern!

Set of twelve cut glass cups...guessing these used to be a punch bowl set. To be used for delicious soy candle projects!

The twin kettle to my find yesterday of the cook pot! How amazing to find a pair in totally different shops! This guy is also in immaculate condition, and it's appearance in my home makes me rethink uses for this pair!

Assortment of bottles and sweet little vintage jar...the lid is quite worn, but will still make an awesome travel candle maybe?

And my favourite find? This amazing washboard!! Check it out...the writing is just so cute! I couldn't resist this little guy and it will now proudly hang on a wall somewhere in the house!

So, that was the last shop of 2011, and a good shop it was too!

My new crafting goddess domain...Mr K keep out!

Mr K and I have recently decided to declutter the study...with its two massive desks from the Queensland State Library, it was indeed very full! Mr K wanted to discard one of the desks, but I offered to do all the moving myself, if he would let me reorganize the garage to make it fit!

Well, fit it did. And now I have an awesome crafting space all to myself! After all, no one else like to hang out in the garage! It's a win win situation!

Look at how I'm now set up! I love my own little piece of crafting heaven!

Top shelves, delightfully organized and out of reach of Miss A's little hands!

My collection of ribbons resides on an old curtain rod installed just for this purpose...

The box at the front is an old tea bag box...perfectly compartmentalized to store all my little bits!

This is an old set of wire drawers that was in one of the cupboards when we moved in 5 years ago...I have prettied them up a bit by lining them with some of my favourite tea towels with their edges hanging over and camouflaging the wire drawers....

A husband and wife are shopping when the husband picks up a case of beer and puts it in their cart.

'What do you think you're doing?' asks the wife.

'They're on sale, only $10 for 24 cans', he replies

'Put them back, we can't afford them', demands the wife, and so they carry on shopping.

A few aisles further on along the woman picks up a $20 jar of face cream and puts it in the basket.

'What do you think you're doing?' asks the husband.

'It’s my face cream. It makes me look beautiful,' replies the wife.

Her husband retorts: 'So does 24 cans of beer and it's half the price.'

He never knew what hit him.

Today's op shopping adventure is proudly brought to you by moi and my close buddy at my vintage vow...

We had an absolutely awesome time today, and as always when accompanied by dear friend, I scored some great finds!

Four little milk jigs, for a project to be divulged at a later date...a French jar with lid and fill line, a sweet little glass that will be used to make a deliciously scented soy candle for Mrs T...and some amazing doilies...now these were termed latch ware doilies! They are delicate and beautiful!

A beautiful little cushion, stashed amongst the baby cot sheets...big sister to one I already have...and some more doilies!

A set of various size and shape baskets to store my ever growing crafting stash...keep your eyes open for some amazing things for sale in the new year!

A cute set of five copper cups with star motifs cut out...currently being used for Christmas decor, casually draped at the entrance to the back door...

A sweet chicken in a bright red teapot! This will live on the kitchen wall somewhere...a great florally cookpot...I have a few ideas but haven't settled on a decision yet!

Four cut glass bowls...one amazing enamelware dish, a retro plate in amazing brown, earthy tones, and a sweet little tea set!

And my very, very, very favourite find of the day? This wonderful 1 litre bottle!!

Day 983 of my captivity:

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets.

Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am. Bastards.

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of 'allergies.' I must learn what this means and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.

The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now...

Things about jewellery....

This post was inspired by Vintage Bird Girl, who displays all her necklaces on a newly purchased spoon rack! What a great idea! I am now on the hunt for a rack of my own, but in the meantime, here is a collection of my jewellery and the ways I currently display it all.....

This is my main storage for my fashion pieces....it is a simple cork board, painted white, with small nails added to the frame to hang all my stuff. The board is strung up by a deep green ribbon with a white feathered bird attached.

Underneath the board, I have a men's coat piece of furniture. This has two small drawers filled with watches and other bits. On top I have a small vintage bowl with angels as feet, which holds some of my rings. The crystal bowl has cotton pads and the crystal perfume bottle was a birthday gift many years ago from a family friend who is now deceased. It holds a special place in my heart.

This is an embroidered piece from my grandmother. I love the simplicity and it is only adorned by one necklace and a bling hair band.

This is the top of my vintage dressing table, a gift from my amazing sister! You can see all the bits on there, including a bird cage which I received for Christmas last year, full of yummy toiletries! Now it serves to store and hang my earrings.

Here is a close up of the cage with earrings hanging off the edges. In the pink waterlily bowl are more earrings!

A vintage mirror sits on top of my dressing table, and is surrounded by perfumes and more jewellery!

Close up of some of my bracelets. They reside in a crystal bowl recently acquired from my mum.

One of my hanging trees...this has long necklaces and rings stored safely and within easy reach.

The other hanging tree, a gift from Ms L for my recent birthday. You can see it is already well adorned with necklaces, bangles and rings!

The contents of the little white cabinet on the right hand side of the dresser. Here live brooches, more earrings and other special treasures. The granddaughter plaque at the back on the bottom shelf was given to me by my grandmother when I was 12.

This gorgeous cross was a gift from mum a few years ago. How beautiful is it?

Finally, the very appropriate picture hanging above my dressing table! See...I have so much stuff, but I love it all!

Op shop things...a midweek thrift!

Now, as you know I am a little bit of a thrifting shop-a-holic! Last week I went on an unplanned adventure to some op shops I have not been to in years!

Well, I am going to start going back! Look at one of my treasures...a vintage crackled glass (proper name please?) bottle with stopper in immaculate condition.

There is a silver collar on the bottle which was black from lack of love and affection! A quick polish revealed the initials F.C engraved on the collar....I love this piece!

My not-so-secret Santa...

As mentioned in my Christmas dessert post, yesterday we had an amazing Christmas lunch with friends...

My amazing friend, Ms L's not so secret santa gift! Ms L's Mum sews up a storm and this is my gift for 2011! How well suited the teatowel is....I absolutely LOVE birds!

I am not sharing my actual secret santa, as Mrs B is launching her business soon...needless to say, I squealed like a child when I opened my gift! I have been badgering her all year to hurry up and launch so I could purchase one! Oh the mystery.....I will wait until Mrs B gives me her seal of approval before I share with you all!

It was a magical day with friends...I love Christmas!

Christmas Paper Chains...

Miss A and I have had a lovely crafting morning! Check out the latest creation in our handmade Christmas adventures!

Cut strips of paper approximately equal in width. We decided to use a fancy edge!

Make your chain by threading pieces of paper through each other and securing with glue.

Get your embellishments ready...we used ribbons, buttons and fabric strips cut with pinking shears.

Look at our fabulous addition to the handmade christmas stash!

Things I make....Christmas dessert!

Well, I am quite infatuated by the page 25 Clever Ideas for the Household!

My latest adventure was with the cookie dough cups! First batch was a disaster! Cookie circles were cut too big and too thick, so I ended up with a stuck together mess of chocolate chip! These were not wasted however, we had the for afternoon tea!

Anyhow, lessons learned and progress was made! 20 successful cookie dough cups contributed to my dessert creation for the Christmas party I attended today...

Recipe:

Cookie dough cups from 25 Clever Ideas for the Household

Mixed berries - fresh or frozen

Thickened cream

Sugar

Cinnamon

Vanilla essence

Dark cooking chocolate

Christmas decorations

Make up your cookie dough cups. These can be created the day before, but make sure you seal them in an airtight container so they don't go soggy!

In a bowl, pour your thickened cream. Add some cinnamon to taste, one cap full of vanilla essence and approx 2 tablespoons of caster sugar. Blend well using electric beaters...until you get a smooth, thick cream mix. Place in the fridge until ready to use. A few hours is ideal, as the cream really sets.

Grate up some dark cooking chocolate.

When ready to serve...

Fill each cookie cup about half way with mixed berries. Add a generous dollop of the cream. Sprinkle grated chocolate over the cream and decorate with your little Christmas cheer! You can also drizzle some of the berry juice over the top, if you used frozen berries...or use some hibiscus syrup! Yum!

Wrapping Christmas Cookies...

Miss A has been spending time with my Mum whilst Mr K and I were still at work...Mum and Miss A made awesome shortbread cookies for the friends at the Christmas party today.

Decorated by the talented hand of Miss A herself, using icing and various little bits, we wrapped the cookies in plastic sleeves to keep them happy and then some Christmassy tissue paper.

Miss A and I then made the cards for each of the kids...designed to become future Christmas ornaments, we used a heavy corrugated cardboard for the back.

We then applied various images using glitter glue, felt, buttons and bows. Here is our finished product...We are very proud...hope you like them too! xxx

New blog design....a change in direction

Just so you know, I am currently playing with various other blog designs....I have several to choose from and quite a few ideas, so gradually you will see things changing... I may have had a little op shop expedition this week that went really well...I mean, REALLY well! I visited an op shop that I had never been to before and had a very successful treasure hunt....

Lo and behold, upon stepping out of the shop with my bag full of goodies, my eyes rested on two other op shops across the road! These were hidden by a car park, some trees and industrial bins; but, being very focussed on making a trip into these lovelies, I successfully negotiated the obstacles in my way and had a great time in these two shops too!

Check it out!

Old style flower press, with tin front and back, delightfully decorated with butterflies...

A little storage box with 2 tiers inside...perfect for some small crafting objects to reside...

A set of 6 amazing retro glasses...these are now our everyday drinking glasses.

Just cos I liked it...a vintage glass bottle with lovely stopper...now living in my bathroom.

The Gentleman's Relish...a small china box, perfect for placement with my other vintage bits...currently residing with my small silver cruet set.

Retro sugar dispenser...just perfect for this coffee loving gal! And check out the beautiful vase in the background! This is where my newly decorated branch tree is sitting on the dining room table...

Friendship plate...my grandmother has one of these and I got this only for that reason! Every time I look at it, I think of her! Not to mention that the writing on it is awesome...to be translated at a later date!

Love, love, love these! To be transformed into soy candles in the very near future....

And my very favourite, best find? These vintage pinking shears! Not only are they in immaculate condition, they are super sharp and cut with ease...I used these on my little Christmas crafting expedition recently... AND look what was inside!!

Underneath the blade holding cardboard, were hidden these little treasures...4 pre-filled, pre-signed bank withdrawal forms...bank account number 98!!! I love discovering little bits of history like this stashed in my finds!

Buttons and ribbons...a DIY Christmas

You remember my little crafting expedition last night? Well, I have found some larger branches, tied them together to form one 'tree" and moved all my little creations to their new home....in addition, due to the size of the new arrangement, I have made the following sweet button and ribbon string to dangle elegantly over the branches!

You will need:

string (raw type is best)

ribbons, all sizes and colours

assorted buttons

hot glue gun

To make this streamer, simply thread your buttons onto the string, leaving approximately equal gaps in between. Tie a knot at the back of the first and last buttons to secure the entire thread.

On the back of the threaded buttons, glue some matching coloured ribbon bows.

Voila! Enjoy your little sweet ornament!

Last might, Mr K and I watched a really cute movie...crazy stupid love. As we were watching, I has set up on my lap and surrounding armchair all sorts of crafty bits...check out what I made!

Using simple fabric scraps, ribbons, buttons, threads and vintage pinking shears (to be shared at a later date), I concocted these little decorations! Now I am on the look out for a larger, better balanced branch to hang these little guys on!

Welcome to my favourite vintage things! These are all items thrifted, handed down from my grandmother, gifted, op shopped, garage saled....well, you get the picture!

All op shop finds...tea cup was gifted

Some of my Carltonware. Tea cups gifted. White plate with green florals was one of my great-grandmothers and is one of two that I have.

Thrifted and gifted! Love the pastel tea sets...perfect for a very fancy tea between friends!

Lots of vintage here...silverware thrifted and handed down from my great grandmother. Royal Doulton espresso cups gifted, egg cup was my mothers when she was a little girl.

Some more Carltonware, some hand me downs, some thrifted vintage...all things I love!

Thrifted silver plated cruet set. All in use for fancy dinners!

Thrifted copper kettle.....love this guy!

Thrifted lamp and lobster mould...possibly two of my favourite bits, simply because I see them every day hanging in my kitchen!

Here are a few of the poems I wrote a few years ago...many of them were inspired by particular events occurring in my life at that time, so each has a story behind it. I will share the stories with the poems...xxx

This one was written in the midst of some difficult times...as you can see, I used gardening as my escape. I did lots and lots of major garden renovations during this time, and when they were finished, I turned my hand to house renovations!

In a contemplative mood this day...I think I was focussing on regaining my happiness...

Well, Santa Claus is indeed coming to town! Miss A received a personalized video from santa, which told her that she was on the good list this year, but she had to keep up the good work of cleaning up her playroom and being nice to her family! Santa videos can be created here.

So with the big fellow, all cosy in his red suit coming soon, I was wondering....how do you keep the spirit of Santa alive with your little ones?

We have to be oh so sneaky...wrapping at all times of the night, stashing in top secret places and making up all sorts of stories to keep the inquiring mind of a six year old focused on the reality of Santa!
